Check your facts: A video game film purportedly showing Red Sea raids is authentic.
On social media, a video game film purporting to show the Houthi group in Yemen firing missiles into the Red Sea has been circulated.
The X, opens new tab, and Facebook, opens new tab—hosted low-resolution video depicts missiles gliding across the horizon before hitting marine boats at sea.
With captions claiming to show "missile attacks from the Houthis" in the Red Sea, the false clip was circulated.
The video game that was uploaded to YouTube and matched with the misleadingly captioned footage that was shared online opens in a new tab. The YouTube video's description refers to it as "Arma 3 gameplay" and states that it is not actual footage.
A representative for the game's creator, Bohemia Interactive, stated that the video game's gameplay is "very likely" similar to that of Arma 3.
Since mid-November, the Houthis have launched attacks against ships in the Red Sea, claiming that this is a show of support for Palestinians amidst Israel's military actions in Gaza. In retaliation, the US and the UK opened a new tab and started conducting attacks throughout Yemen in mid-January.
VERDICT
captioned incorrectly. The movie is taken from a YouTube video of video gameplay; it is not real footage shot in the Red Sea.
