(Reuters) - February 8 (The word "to" that was omitted in paragraph two of this item from February 8 has been added.)

In an interview that aired on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that his country will defend its interests "to the end" and that it has no intention of extending its conflict in Ukraine to neighboring Poland and Latvia.
Putin stated that Western leaders had realized they couldn't strategically destroy Russia and were unsure of what to do next in his first conversation with an American journalist since before Russia invaded Ukraine almost two years ago.
"We're prepared for this conversation," he declared.

In addition, Putin expressed confidence that a deal could be reached to release Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, an American who has been imprisoned in Russia for almost a year and is awaiting trial for espionage charges.
Putin made the remarks during a two-and-a-half-hour interview with Tucker Carlson, the host of a conservative talk show, which took place in Moscow on Tuesday and was broadcast on TuckerCarlson.com.

In response to the question of whether he could envision sending Russian soldiers to a NATO member, Putin said, "Only in one case, if Poland attacks Russia." Why? because Poland, Latvia, or any other place is uninteresting to us. Why would we act in that manner? Simply put, we're not interested."

Putin made his comments in Russian, which were dubbed into English. He started off by making a long speech discussing Russia's relations with Poland, Ukraine, and other nations.
For a significant portion of the conversation, Putin bemoaned the fact that Ukraine had been close to reaching an agreement to halt hostilities during negotiations in Istanbul in April 2022 but had retreated once Russian soldiers left the area around Kyiv.
"Well now let them think how to reverse the situation," he replied. "We're not opposed to it. If it weren't so depressing, it would be hilarious. The frenzy, the internal issues, and the unending mobilization in Ukraine will eventually lead to an accord."

The head of Russia stated that the United States needed to focus on urgent internal matters. Is it not preferable to engage in negotiations with Russia? Come to a compromise. Already aware of the current state of affairs and aware that Russia would fight to the latter end to protect its interests," Putin remarked.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Washington has provided more than $110 billion in aid, making it apparent that it has no interest in negotiations under Putin's conditions.

The last time Putin was formally interviewed by a U.S. media outlet was in October 2021, during an interview with Hadley Gamble of CNBC.
The Carlson interview was conducted as US senators were debating whether to increase funding for the combat campaign in Ukraine. On the same day that it aired, ground forces commander Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine took the position of the well-liked army chief.
A bill that $61 billion in new funding for Ukraine was advanced in the U.S. Senate through a procedural vote, but it is uncertain in the Republican-dominated House of Representatives because many members, especially those close to former President Donald Trump, have voted against the aid.

ADVANCEMENT IN THE JOURNALIST'S CASE

Putin indicated that there had been some progress in the discussion of the Gershkovich case between US and Russian secret agencies.
Though he did not specifically name Vadim Krasikov, Putin implied that Moscow wants Germany to release Krasikov in exchange, who was found guilty of killing a Chechen dissident in Berlin in 2019.

"There have been many successful examples of these talks crowned with success," Putin stated. "Probably this is going to be crowned with success as well but we have to come to an agreement."

High-profile prisoner exchanges between Russia and the US have been arranged before; the most recent one took place in December 2022 when Moscow exchanged Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout for American basketball player Brittney Griner, who had been found guilty of narcotics offenses in Russia.

According to the Kremlin, Putin approved of the Carlson interview because the former Fox News host's perspective was different from the "one-sided" coverage of the Ukraine conflict by numerous Western media sources.
Carlson is thought to have close ties to Trump, who is anticipated to represent the Republican Party in the upcoming presidential election in the United States in November.
Trump has urged for a de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, where the Biden administration has firmly backed the Zelenskiy government while griping about the billions of dollars in aid that have been delivered to Kyiv thus far.

Carlson, for one, has claimed that a large portion of the war coverage in Western media is slanted in favor of Kyiv.
