Russia is attempting a key military aim by launching its first coherent offensive in months. Analysts say that this could be Vladimir Putin's way of achieving one of his main goals. This is Russia's first cohesive offensive in over a year and a half.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, its forces are launching coordinated attacks along four front axes in the Kharkiv-Luhansk front in an effort to drive Ukraine out of the Luhansk region completely.
However, the US-based thinktank stated that success will only come at "a very high cost" and necessitate months of mediocre tactical advancements.
According to the ISW, the offensives imply that Russian forces are "undertaking a larger, months-long cohesive operational effort to seize the east bank of the Oskil River from Kupyansk to Oskil City".
Russia might build on its achievements with such an operation, since there would be "little risk of serious Ukrainian counterattacks" due to a large water impediment.
Even slight operational advances could be twisted by Mr. Putin's campaign in the elections that take place next month.
According to the ISW, offensive activities were occurring in the four regions listed below.
- Northeast of Kupyansk
- Northwest of Svatove
- Southwest of Svatove
- West of Kreminna
Kupyansk
The east bank of Kupyansk City is being advanced upon by the sixth Combined Arms Army.
In an effort to cut off Ukrainian defenses, the air force has attacked bridges.
In December, Russian forces apparently lost a considerable number of armored vehicles, but they have since increased their attacks and gained tactical victories in Synkivka, a settlement northeast of Kupyansk.
Svatove
Attacks northwest of the city of Svatove have been stepped up by the First Guards Tank Army, which has apparently taken two villages.
Additionally, according to Russian reports, they are launching a "massive offensive" toward Tabaivka and Krokhmalne, penetrating the settlements just to the north of the city.
Russian soldiers are conducting a less aggressive offensive southwest of Svatove, with the ultimate objective of moving on Borova settlement.
Kreminna
Russian forces are said to have made very slight progress in a "large number of assaults" west of Kreminna, using a "significant" number of tanks and armored vehicles.
The most likely operational goal is to retake Lyman since doing so would create access to Oskil City.
