Breaking news-The mayor of NYC rescinds his plan to lodge migrants in a luxury skyscraper in response to community backlash.

Originally marketed as opulent residential property featuring a swimming pool, the structure was anticipated to be transformed into a transitory haven for undocumented immigrants.

Following opposition from the Harlem community, New York City Mayor Eric Adams withdrew plans to repurpose an abandoned luxury apartment building into a shelter for undocumented immigrants.

According to CBS News, Adams unexpectedly showed up at a community meeting in the Upper Manhattan area on Thursday. The attendees were there to talk about claims that the building located at the intersection of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. and 130th Street was being secretly prepared for immigration.

The building's developers defaulted on financing, so although it was initially marketed as opulent residential space with a swimming pool, it has remained vacant for almost ten years, according to the publication. According to city records, it comprises 35 units and was constructed in 2007.

According to the New York Post, it was then leased to a nonprofit organization that had been collaborating with the city's Department of Social Services/Homeless Services to use it as a refuge for either immigrants or the native homeless population of the city.

Bunk bed cartons were seen being transported into the building by nearby residents. They called a meeting as a result of not receiving any response. They expressed their ire at being kept in the dark and the lack of communication.

"As we have people here who need the space, I don't agree with it becoming a sanctuary for asylum seekers," stated Tiffany Fulton, executive director of a nearby group that supports underprivileged areas.

According to the 2020 census, Central Harlem is a generally low-income neighborhood with a 28.4% poverty rate compared to 18.0% citywide. Approximately 44% of the neighborhood's people are Black.

"Millions on migrants, what about youth programs?" read one sign at the conference. According to Adams, the city may lose up to $12 billion as a result of the illegal immigration issue by 2025. Since the spring of 2022, at least 170,000 illegal immigrants have entered New York.

Adams showed up for the gathering and accepted questions from the locals.

"You hold the position of mayor. One resident of Harlem remarked, "We don't want to hear excuses."

However, the mayor declared that local homeless New Yorkers will be housed in the building instead of illegal immigration.

"I told the team, 'Find out what's going on here,'" said Adams. "When there are ongoing needs in a community, we're not relocating people into a brand-new structure. It is not going to occur.

"You will not have migrants and asylum seekers in that property."

A request for comment on the subject from Fox News Digital was not answered by the mayor's office.

Regina Smith, a resident of Harlem, told CBS that the area felt disregarded and that there were already too many homeless shelters in the area.

"We're being priced out of the community," she stated.

Leslie Johnson, a resident, asserted that affordable housing need to be utilized in place of the flats.

Johnson said to CBS, "We could go into these apartments."
